Coal tar pitch is a by-product generated while processing coking coal into low ash metallurgical coke in a recovery-type coke oven plant. Coal tar accounts for around 3.5-4% of coke produced. Coal tar pitch is a complex chemical with 22 chemical and physical properties obtained through coal tar distillation, which is further processed into quality coal tar pitch of desired chemical and physical properties.

During the past 20 years, the steel industry has migrated from traditonal points of production in North America and Western Europe to new emerging markets. Historically, pitch was supplied in solid form. However, the trend to liquid pitch continues to grow. Whether transporting pitch in solid or liquid form, the shipment of pitch requires special handling, equipment and terminals. This is especially the case for liquid pitch which must be kept heated at all times.
Coal tar pitch (CTP) is commonly used in the aluminium smetling and roofing industries. Coal tar pitch is an amorphous residue produced by the distillation or heat treatment of coal tar, which is a by-product of coal when it is carbonized to make coke. This process typically occurs in coke ovens and can be found in steel-making plants world-wode. Exposure to aerosolized coal tar and coal tar products can bring disease for skin and breath system.
